Are you staring at the blank page or screen, unsure about where to begin? Have you hit a block in the middle of writing your story? As a writer, I know that feeling, and I’m always on the look out for writing prompts and inspiration. Imagine my delight when I discovered the wonderful website Six Word Stories, where entire short short stories are told in just six words. It’s a great place to jump start a story, to brainstorm or to invent your a back story.
The site was inspired by Ernest Hemingway’s six word story: “For sale: baby shoes, never worn”, which is the original short short story. Hemingway’s colleagues bet him that he couldn’t write a complete story in just six words. They paid up. Hemingway is said to have considered it his best work.
Six Word Stories invites everyone to contribute their own six word story. Some of my favourites are:
“Found true love. Married someone else.” ~ Dave Eggers
“We’re lying in bed. She’s lying.” ~ Seloc
“Unwanted boy grows into wanted man.” ~ Nate Christen
“Sharp new yellow pencil. Limitless potential.” ~ Melissa Wilson
“Rain. Two strangers. One umbrella. Love.” ~ Megha
“Left handed woman seeks Mr. Right.” ~ Amber
